Dragon Age 4: Dreadwolf Could Be Released in 2023

The hugely successful Dragon Age series of games is set to be expanded, with developer BioWare announcing recently that the fourth game in the franchise will be subtitled Dreadwolf. What else do we know about it and how could the current popularity of dragons in popular culture help to boost its chances of success?

Details of the Game

The Dragon Age franchise began in 2009, with the game subtitled Origins. This RPG was well-received by critics and players, to the extent of sales of more than three million units and spawning a couple of follow-ups, 2011’s Dragon Age II and Dragon Age: Inquisition from 2014.

By 2015, the developers were working on a fourth game for the series, but it was stopped in 2017. A year later, work was started up again, but it is only in 2022 that more details have come out, including the fact that it will be titled Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.

Solas is going to be the main character players face up to and this is a dangerous character we met in Inquisition, but BioWare have said that it isn’t necessary to play that game before trying Dreadwolf. In fact, Solas is known as the Dread Wolf, so the title’s already telling us that he’s playing a big part in it.

Not a lot of details have been released about the game so far, and while the trailer looks amazing, it doesn’t really give a lot of clues about what the plot might be. The latest estimate for the release date is 2023, with suggestions that it might be towards the end of the year before it sees the light of day. It was originally said to have a 2021 release date, so it seems reasonable to suggest that it may be delayed again at some point.

As for the platforms that Dreadwolf will be released on, it’s been reported that these will be the Xbox Series X and S, the PlayStation 5, and Windows PCs. Inquisition introduced an open-world format and we can probably expect the upcoming game to carry on with this style. However, some sources have claimed that it will be a smaller game focused more heavily on heists.

Reports from early in 2021 said that it will be a single-player game, with no multiplayer option available. It has gone through a few different project names before settling on Dreadwolf, with both Joplin and Morrison mentioned by the developer. It’s unclear how much remains of the work done in these phases and whether the company’s vision has remained the same all the time.

Dragons in Popular Culture

Dragons have been present in cultures around the planet for centuries, but in the last few years we’ve seen them far more often, as these mythical creatures have taken a firm hold on popular culture. Back in 2013, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year and introduced us to Smaug, a giant dragon voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch.

2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings featured a dragon alongside other fantastic creatures. On our TV screens, the dragon sequences in Game of Thrones were some of the most dramatic in the whole series, while The Mandalorian also used a dragon to good effect. These examples all show us different ways of using technology to portray dragons, from incredible CGI effects to the way that motion capture techniques were used to turn Cumberbatch into Smaug.

Dragons have always been popular in games, as we can see when we look at the casino games at Bodog, where they appear in several titles. The software for online casino games allows developers to create varied slots based on many different themes, such as Dragon Hatch, Dragon Legend, and Dragon Blast. They sit alongside slots on other themes, as well as modern versions of traditional table games like blackjack and roulette.

When we look at video games, there’s no shortage of dragon-based titles or games where these fire-breathing monsters make an appearance. Their size and ferocity means that they’re often used as a boss or final boss to be defeated, as is the case in World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV, while Dota 2 has dragons as playable characters.

Dragons also play an important role in tabletop games such as Dungeons and Dragons, as well as Dragonfire. In these games, the dragons are represented on cards or other printed formats, meaning players are free to imagine what they’re really like and what it would be like to face up to them.

Will Dragon Age 4: Dreadwolf Be a Success?

The success of the first three games in this franchise suggests that the fourth game will also be welcomed by players. With these mythical animals now more widely seen in popular culture than ever before, it seems like the perfect time to launch this game and take advantage of the fact that people can’t seem to get enough of these fearsome creatures.
