WordPress installs usually come with default sets of premade templates. Since these designs stay the same for every buyer, it’s common that many clients don’t like them. As a matter of fact, almost 80% of WordPress users change their free themes to premium themes as soon as they install the platform.
Installing new themes in WordPress is easy but it can be a challenging task for many new users. in fact, it can be also tricky for some users if it is not done correctly.
In this step-by-step guide, we will explain different ways to upload and install a WordPress theme correctly.
How to Install a WordPress Theme
There are three methods to install a WordPress theme and they are –
- Installing a WordPress Theme from the WordPress Themes Page
- Installing a WordPress Theme via WordPress Dashboard
- Installing a WordPress Theme via FTP
In this tutorial, we will discuss these 3 different ways to install a WordPress theme, one by one. Let’s start with the first one.
Method 1: Install a WordPress Theme from the WordPress Themes Page
This is the easiest way to install a new theme right from the themes page. However, you should keep in mind that this method works only for the free themes that are available in the WordPress themes directory.
First of all, go to Appearance -> Themes from your WordPress dashboard. The page should look like the following –
Besides the default themes, there is also a big ‘Add New Theme‘ box. Click on that box. Alternatively, you can click the ‘Add New‘ button from the top of the page. In both cases, you will be taken to a page like this –
Now, you should search for the theme using search box. Once you find a suitable theme then click on the Install option. This will automatically download and install the theme in your website.
Method 2: Install a WordPress Theme via WordPress Dashboard
If you want to install a premium theme or the one you downloaded from a third party website, then you need to upload it via WordPress Dashboard.
Now, you need to go to the Appearances -> Themes page and click on the ‘Add New Theme‘ box or the ‘Add New‘ button. In the resulting page, click the ‘Upload Theme‘ button. You will be taken to a page similar to the following –
Click ‘Choose File‘ and choose the zipped archive of your desired theme. Once the file is uploaded, the item will be installed automatically.
Method 3: Install a WordPress Theme via FTP
If you find it difficult to upload a theme using above two methods, there is another way to install a WordPress theme. For this method, you will require the downloaded zipped archive of the theme as well as an FTP client like FileZilla.
Now all you need to do is to extract the archive file in your computer. Next you need to open up FTP client and connect to your web server using your login credentials. Go to the ‘WordPress’ directory and open the ‘wp-content’ folder. Finally, open the ‘themes’ folder and upload the extracted theme folder.
Make sure that you have copied all the files correctly.
Once the files are copied, get back to the Appearance -> Themes page of your website dashboard. You will see the uploaded theme there. Click on the theme box, you will find ‘activate’ or ‘preview theme’ options there.
