After the dawn of the internet making it easy and having almost all the content for free we have various applications in our smartphones that allow us to send all our messages for free across the world and be in touch with all our friends and relatives.

It has over 590 million users sharing their messages for free in the form of text messages, images, voice recordings and videos. It also stores all the data in device and also has it all backed up in case of change in the devices. It is free for the first year and then charged for $0.99 per year. On feb 19,2014Facebook Inc. announced it was acquiring WhatsAppInc for $19 billion.

It runs smoothly on 3G or Wi-Fi connectivity, and is available for Android, iOS, Symbian, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone enabled device. Like others, WhatsApp also notifies you when a message has been received on the other side.

Viber

Developed by Viber Media, it is a cross-platform instant messaging, voice over Internet protocol application for smartphones. In addition to text messaging, users can exchange images, videos and audio messages but it lacks of Status option.

It is as easy to setup and have very clean & simple interface; offers free domestic, international calls including all the landline numbers; Can send save multimedia content. It has an attraction of the use of various stickers available in-app for entertaining and having better conversations.

On 14 February 2014, the company was acquired by Rakuten for $900 million. It has more than 300 million subscribers.

In this application, we can also connect it to facebookaccount ,have group chat codes and have chat history backup. The shake and drift gestures are new compared to the other applications and makes you go social.

It is one of the popular instant messaging apps developed in china.

LINE

LINE is a Japanese application for instant messaging also available for personal computers and smartphones. It offers a good experience for social networking with unlimited calling and messaging 24 hours a day, that’s free voice calls and free messages. LINE is now available in more than 230 countries around the world and has over 180 million users. Features include high quality voice calls, a message function with icons, photo sharing, location information, ways to express yourself with stickers and Emoji, and much more.

SnapChat

SnapChat was developed by two Stanford University students, Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy with a new concept of  a time-limited photo sharing application.

SnapChat gained popularity because of the temporary nature of the images sent. Images are captured and then sent immediately, to select Snapchat compatriots, with a self-destruct timer built in.

Images, or videos, can be sent for anything up to ten seconds, and then wipe themselves off the receiver’s phone. Whilst there is nothing to stop a screenshot, senders are notified if this occurs. Image editing is also possible, but only to a narrow degree.

A small level of text can be added, and images can be sketched over, so you can show your friends what you look like with a bright red cartoon afro. You can also save your own images. It has 100 million users who are using this application,Snapchat is originally from the U.S.

KAKAO TALK

KakaoTalk is a communication tool originated from south korea,it is having 100 million users. It allow smartphone users to make free calls to contacts using the same service and to send text messages for free with no need of registering his/her mobile number. KakaoTalk is available for the iPhone, for Android phones, for BlackBerry and Windows Phone, and works on Wi-Fi and 3G networks.

It has features like unlimited free calls and text messages to other KakaoTalk users, Group messaging, Huge user base and many others.

It also have voice call ,groupchats,qr code and shake gesture features and used by 90% of south Korean people.

KIK

You can also create and send different memes from within Kik, or “Photobomb” your friends. The latter is Kik’s answer to SnapChat, which we will cover later.

Kik also prides itself on being personal and private, not having to share your mobile number or email address, rather a username that you can create.

In February 2012, Nimbuzz announced the discontinuation of support for ICQ, AIM, Myspace and Hyves because the general lack of usage of these chat services.
