India’s wedding market is growing at a pace of 25 to 30 percent per year, is responsible for more than one-quarter of all weddings globally per year.  It is poised to be the youngest country in the world by 2020.

Sensing the opportunity to capitalise this untapped market, WeddingWire decided to expand its arm in the Indian market and has set up its country headquarters in Gurugram.

“We are committed to leveraging our company’s strengths into new international arenas, and we believe that India provides the quintessential opportunity to deliver innovative technology and transparent services to couples and creative professionals,” said WeddingWire CEO Timothy Chi.

The company has appointed Ankur Sarawagi, who will serve as a Country Manager for WeddingWire in India. He will be responsible for leading local operations, hiring for key positions, and will be working closely with WeddingWire’s Co-Founder and CMO, Sonny Ganguly, to accelerate regional growth.

Prior to joining WeddingWire, Sarawagi was the co-founder and co-Chief Business Officer at Nearbuy (formerly Groupon India), where he grew and scaled a team to more than 400 employees. Though, he started his career as a consultant with Bain & Company in Delhi.

WeddingWire Inc. currently operates online marketplaces for the wedding industry in 15 countries, including the US, Canada, Spain, Italy, France, Mexico, Brazil and employs over 900 staff globally.

WeddingWire was founded in 2007 near Washington, D.C., USA. The platform connects engaged couples with event professionals. Its online offerings include vendor reviews (more than 4 million of them), professional wedding planner contacts, venue guides and other wedding-related services, with a database of more than 400,000 businesses. It claims to hosts 10 million monthly unique users across its mobile and web platforms.

With an initial focus on Delhi NCR, WeddingWire has aggressive plans to expand pan-India. Engaged couples in India and abroad will likely get benefit from WeddingWire’s industry expertise and extensive research in developing a robust hyper-local platform that caters across India’s diverse cultures and customs.
